Did you know....
Evening primrose is a 2 m tall plant that in the first year builds only low bundles of leaves and in the second year the blossoming stems grows up. Primrose has dark yellow flowers sized 8 cm. These flowers open in the evening around 6 p.m. and close after 24 hours. The scent of flowers is apparent especially at night when they are pollinated especially by night butterflies. Anthers mature first and stigma is capable of pollination no sooner than evening of the next day. Evening primrose is erroneously claimed and still thought to originate in North America and was imported to Europe at the beginning of the1600´s. However, the truth is that evening primrose was most likely imported from the Far East or originates directly in Europe. In the early 1700´s it was used in Europe as a root crop; its roots in the first year of life may be dug out and used for preparing salads. Locally, evening primrose was used as animal feed and later on as a herbal remedy.
